Poza-i-Ishan Research Farm

History:

Poza Aishan’s  Research Farm was established in 1335 (1956), by Juma Gul Khan, the vice-governor to the Qataghan territory, which includes Baghlan, Kunduz, Takhar and Badakhshan provinces. The area of this farm is 517 Jeribs. It was purchased from the local landlords and registered under the name of Livestock Development Farm in the estate office. This farm was used as livestock farm  for animals like Qaraqul sheeps, cows and horses. In 1347 (1968), the farm was changed from Livestock Development Farm to Poza-i-Ishan Research Farm. It is one of the best farms (1st) of the country where plants like cereals, vegetables, fruits and industrial plants could  be cultivated. A wide canal  (Nahr-i-bozurg) crosses the south-east part of the farm which has made the irrigation through canals easier. In the recent  years, through a Presidential Decree, 50 Jeribs land from the west-southern side of the farm was devoted to the Agriculture Faculty and consequently, the faculty’s building was constructed on this piece of land.

Poza-i-Ishan Research Farm is  located alongside Baghlan – Kunduz highway 557 meters above the sea level. Presently, it is used for seed multiplication and research and covers 467 Jeribs land. Fortunately, the land of this farm is never  occupied. Its establishments include 2 warehouses for storage, equipped parking for vehicles, office building for the personnel and a newly constructed building for the guards. The construction of the farm’s wall is about to complete. Roads and canals, 3 big tractors, one 50 HP tractor, 2 seeders, 5 threshers (small and big), 3 disc plough-3 blades and 2 disc plough-9 blades exist in the farm. At the  empty part of the farm  next to the Agriculture faculty,  land has been prepared and subsequently will be exploited  for further use. The farm is irrigated with canals, 14 technical persons and 12 gardeners are busy with research activities.

In addition to the production of new verities of various plants, this farm has the capacity to produce crops such as saplings, straw, cotton, sugar bead, motherboard seed, and etc which can be sold and have an income of, approximately US $ 40,000 annually.

Suggestions:

Since the farm is suitable for research experiments and multiplication of the saplings, the following should be taken into consideration:

  • Pruning s and management of fruit and non-fruit saplings
  • Renovation (lining) of the canals.
  • Concreting or gravelling the roads.
  • Leveling the demolished areas for further use.
  • Increasing the number of technical personnel and workers.
